Update No. 21: Good News for Private School Teachers and Proprietors
The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo yesterday delivered his twenty-first (21st) Address to the Nation on Covid-19. The purpose of his address as usuall was to update the Nation on the current Covid-19 pandemic and the measures taken by the Government to curb the spread of the virus.
The headline of his address yesterday was the reopening of schools. Recall that, the President announced the closure of all schools both public and private as far back as March 2020 when the novel coronavirus first showed up in the country.
Many Ghanaians, including teachers and students, hoped that the school life was to return in no time but that has not been the case throughout the year 2020. At a point in time during the past year however, Junior High and Senior High School final year students were allowed back to school to prepare for their final exams. Layer senior high school students in the second years were also allowed to go back to school.
Private school teachers and proprietors have been on the neck of the government pushing for the reopening of schools since they have been at home for almost a year without any form of renumeration. The private school teachers complained bitterly since their colleagues in the public schools received their salaries continuously while at home.
According to the President, however, Students in Kindergarten, Primary, Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools are to return to school on the 18th of January 2021. While those in the tertiary institutions are to return on the 9th of January 2021.
He added that Ghana Education Service, Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health will collaborate to provide guidelines for school authorities, teachers and students on how to observe the various Covid-19 safety protocols in the schools.
Nose masks, thermometer guns, hand sanitisers and other personal protective equipment will be supplied by the Government.
