Lionel Messi is not in the group selected for FC Barcelona’s trip to Dynamo Kiev
Lionel Messi is not in the group selected for FC Barcelona’s trip to Dynamo Kiev tomorrow (20.00 GMT/UTC). Ronald Koeman is giving him a rest. The same goes for Frenkie de Jong. I’ve been gathering information for the last 2 or 3 days and from what I’ve been able to gather, Manchester City doesn’t want the Argentinean to come when his contract ends at the end of the season.
A very close source confirms me that this door has closed. 2 main reasons for this: his age and the financial aspect.
As for age, the Argentinean is 33 years old and heading towards the end of his career. The Citizen managers know that they would bring in a Messi who won’t be at the same level as he was during his 17-year career in Barcelona. The Argentinian himself has said he is nearing retirement.
On the financial aspect, even if he arrived as a free agent so without a transfer amount, his salary is astronomical. He earns around 100 million euros per season. A colossal investment for any club especially as we are in the middle of a huge financial crisis due to the pandemic.
Between now and next summer, that can of course change. But for now, here’s where we are.
